Dr. Nelson was born in Chicago and raised in Dunham Woods near St. Charles, Illinois, a western suburb of Chicago. He went to Elgin Academy where he won the Ora L. Pelton and Susan B. Sears Awards. He then attended the University of Minnesota and the University of Illinois College of Medicine in Chicago, where he was a James Scholar.
