Connection to Illinois: Leonard was born and raised in Chicago. He earned his Master of Arts in English from Chicago State University and his Doctorate of Art, The Teaching of English from Illinois State University in Normal. He moved to Springfield in 1990 and lived there until the time of his death.

Biography: Dr. Marcellus J. Leonard was the Pastor at the Heritage Free Will Baptist Church since October 2012. He was a Pastor, Teacher, and Spiritual Leader. In 1990, Dr. Leonard began teaching at the University of Illinois at Springfield. He was an Associate Professor of English and Director of the Center for First Year Students. While there, he taught writing poetry, the long poem, drama, short stories, the novel and creative writing. He taught at the University until 2009.
