Penfield Books. 2005

This book contains excerpts from three published novels by Julie Jensen McDonald, all featuring the author's Danish-American heritage. The novels are "Amalie's Story," "Petra," and "The Sailing Out." "This combination is a revelation to me," Ms. McDonald said. "It clearly shows traits passed from one ation to another in similar life situations - something I had taken for granted." Julie Jensen McDonald grew up in Harlan, Iowa, in a part of the state heavily settled by Danes. Her Danish maternal grandparents immigrated in 1882, and her father came from Denmark when he was 14. Her grandmother, Mette Marie Ibsen Faurschou, told stories of "the old country" that inspired Ms. McDonald to write the first of generational novels, "Amalie's Story.
