Illinois Connection

Ethel lived her whole life in Illinois.

Biographical and Professional Information

Ethel was both an author and librarian. Writing her own stories for her own children turned into writing stories for editors Carolyn Sherwin Bailey and Lillian Davidson. Stories and articles for the Sunday school market were also sold. This was during the depression. Her first juvenile book had just been accepted by Lothrop, Lee and Shepherd when Pearl Harbor changed the face of the world. That book went the way of all cancelled plans. All during the war she studied writing courses. She lost her son in WWII

Pleasant Hill

Brethren Pub. House. 1956

Excerpt from Pleasant Hill

IN this book it has been my purpose to tell the story of the old Pleasant Hill Church of the Brethren, located between Girard and Virden, Illinois. After three years of research I present to you the picture contained herein. The difficulties have been numerous and I ask your leniency if I have erred in reconstructing these events so nearly lost to posterity.

As many interesting details have been omitted as have been used. I ask your pardon if your story has not been included. All names, dates, and events are facts. No doubt inaccuracies have crept in, but little of the book is pure conjecture.
