Illinois ConnectionZoll was born in Chicago, Illinois. He graduated from Knox College in 1952 with a B. A. and from Northwestern University in 1953 with his M. A. Zoll also did post graduate work at Northwestern University in 1957-58.
Biographical and Professional InformationDonald Atwell Zoll was a well-known writer, political philosopher and naturalist. When he retired from university teaching, he specialized in the elephant and training methodologies. His interests bridged captive elephant management and wild elephant conservation in Africa.Zoll taught English and horsemanship at Culver Military Academy in 1954 and 1955. He taught political science at the University of Tennessee in Knoxville in 1958 and 1959 and 1960 and 1961, Defiance College in 1959 and 1960, at Kansas State College in Pittsburg in 1962 and at Arizona State University between 1972 and 1989. He also taught philosophy and political science at the University of Saskatchewan.Zoll was a contributor to ''Modern Age'' for over a quarter of a century, ''National Review'', and other conservative periodicals during the 1970's. He was a contributor of verse to ''Midwest Quarterly'' and was the Editor of two national trade magazines.Formerly a professional horseman, Zoll always named foxhunting as a major passion and big-game fishing as a hobby. He kept a nondescript collection of horses and dogs on his small farm. He spent 1961-62 in England with his wife, who is British.
