Biographical and Professional InformationSaul Alinsky was a community organizer and writer. He is generally considered to be the founder of modern community organizing, and has been compared to Thomas Paine as being "one of the great American leaders of the nonsocialist left. His graduate work was at the University of Chicago in criminology. His work in organizing the poor to fight for their rights as citizens has been internationally recognized. In the late 1930's he organized the "Back of the Yards" area in Chicago (the neighborhood made famous in Upton Sinclair's The Jungle.
