John Otis Carney

Pen Name: None Connection to Illinois: Carney was born in Chicago. Biography: The grandson of wealthy industrialist William Carney, John Carney spent most of his childhood in Lake Forest, Illinois. After attending Lake Forest Academy, John went to Princeton and graduated in 1943 with a degree in English. During World War II, he became a Marine Corps captain, flying missions over the Pacific islands for 22 months.The author of some 17 books during his lifetime, his first, ''Love at First Flight'', was completed in 1943, co-authored with a service buddy from Lake Forest. After the war, he contributed articles to the Chicago Tribune, Los Angeles Times, and Wall Street Journal. As a screen and TV writer, he achieved high success with such shows as Dragnet, Zane Grey Theater, The Dick Powell Show, and many others.
