Military adversaries have always spied on one another, but during World War II aerial surveillance was conducted on a scale unimagined in previous wars. On all sides in the European and Pacific theaters, high-flying reconnaissance planes equipped with automatic cameras flew far behind enemy lines, returning with images that revealed to trained photo interpreters a wide range of military and civilian activities that were shaping the course of the war. Trying to keep pace with the increasing sophistication of aerial photography and its interpretation, military forces on the ground adopted an array of "passive defenses" to hide their installations and equipment from the camera's glass eye.
