Fulton John Sheen
Born: 1895 in El Paso, Illinois
Died: 1979 in New York, New York Pen Name: None Connection to Illinois: Bishop Sheen was born in El Paso and ordained a priest in the Peoria Diocese in 1919. Biography: He earned the Cardinal Mercier Prize for International Philosphy in 1923. In 1951 He was appointed auxilliary Bishop of the Archdiocese of New York. He was there until 1956 when he became the Bishop of Rochester and in 1969 he became the Archbishop of the Titular See of Newport, Wales. He hosted a radio program 'The Catholic Hour' for 20 years (1930-50) before moving to television with 'Life is Worth Living' that aired from 1951-1957. In 1961 he was the host of the Fulton Sheen Program 1961-1968 for which he won an Emmy Award for Most Outstanding Television Personality. His shows were rebroadcast starting in 2009 on EWTN and Trinity Broadcasting. Sheen is often referred to as one of the first television evangelists.
