Connection to Illinois: Liane has lived in Evanston, Illinois for the past 38 years. She holds an MA in English Language and Literature from the University of Chicago.

Biography: Liane is an award-winning journalist with publication credits in national periodicals such as ''E Magazine'', ''The Nation'', ''Mother Jones'', ''Ms''., ''Environment Health Perspectives'', ''In These Times'', and ''Business Ethics''. Locally, she has written for ''Conscious Choice'', NY Times supplement -- ''Chicago Life'', ''The Chicago Tribune'' (Tempo Section, and Tribune Magazine) and the ''Chicago Sun-Times''. Her book, ''Breast Cancer: Poisons, Profits and Prevention'', (Common Courage Press, 1996) was the result of a three-year journey. First came a cover story in ''Ms.'' on the environmental connection to the disease. The research led her to understand the incestuous connection among polluting industries and the regulatory agencies, the cancer diagnostic industry, conventional cancer treatment and the media. She has also written four documentary films and directed one of them; have taught gifted programs in a Chicago public high school and taught college - level creative writing and communication skills. These days, she continues to write and speak across the country and in Canada to groups and gatherings on the media, politics, public health, food, and the environment. She has over a forty-year history as a community activist and educator. Led the battle in her town to declare Evanston a City of Sanctuary for undocumented Central American refugees in the 1980s. Served as President of Women in Communications, served as a board member of the Chicago Committee to Defend the Bill of Rights, the Society of Midland Authors and BioVision, a food education association. Presently, she is Chair of the Environment Committee at Beth Emet Synagogue. She was a co-founder and former chairman of Chicago Media Watch, a volunteer watchdog group that has monitored the media for bias, distortions and omissions. CMW published a quarterly newsletter –which she published--and convened biannual media conferences to bring vital information to a growing list of members concerned with the consequences of corporate ownership by less than 6 major media corporations. Her second book, an expose of a political leader and his administration will be completed in 2013.
