Connection to Illinois: Engler was born in and still resides in Chicago.

Biography: Engler was born into a poor, Southside Chicago family. His father died when he was a boy, leaving his mother alone to raise 4 children. Robert worked his way through college, ending up with degrees from the University of Illinois at Urbana and the University of Chicago Divinity School. He then became a professor at the City Colleges of Chicago, advancing there to become a department chairman and a labor union leader. Engler's poems and stories have appeared in ''Borderlands Evergreen Chronicles'', ''Hyphen'', ''Christopher Street'', ''The James White Review'', ''American Letters and Commentary'', ''Literal Latte'' and many other magazines, journals and online e-zines. His drawings appear online in ''Black Elvis'', ''Rio'' and other e-zines. He continues to teach and live in Chicago and New Orleans.


Awards:
  • Illinois Arts Council Literary Award for his poem ''Flower Festival at Genzano'' which appeared in ''Whetstone''.
